Work Party Report: Sunday 22nd January 2006Waterways Car Park, Sankey Valley Park, Warrington Weather - dry, mild and sunny. Under the supervision of two members of the Warrington Ranger Service, 12 SCARS volunteers assembled at the Waterways Car Park, which is situated alongside the canal where Great Sankey meets Warrington. The plan for the day was to clear the over-grown vegetation and open up the car park area so that vehicles parked there could be seen. After some instruction from the Rangers about which trees not to cut down (the ones with yellow ribbons on) we started with saws and loppers to remove all the unwanted scrub, trees etc. which we then took to an area where later in the week it would be put through a chipper. The resulting chips would then be used as ground cover in between the trees that we didn't cut down. After dinner we moved to another site on the opposite side of the car park and proceeded as before, clearing and moving trees etc. It was amazing the difference that was made in just a few hours.
(Above and below) With the yellow ribbons warning them which trees NOT to fell, the volunteers clip and saw their way through the undergrowth.
Another branch on its way to be chipped.
