Restoration Round-up
by Colin Greenall

Part 2: News from the Three Boroughs

Halton BC

Paul Wright, the Landscape Services Manager for Halton BC, gave a presentation to our Annual Meeting, outlining the plans for the restoration of the canal in the Borough. These included a new swing bridge at Tan House Lane (Carter House Bridge). This has now gone out to tender, and it is planned that the work on site should begin in July this year.

An account of the March meeting with consultants Royal Haskoning is given on in this issue. We look forward to seeing what results from this.

On a recent visit to Bewsey Lock I found that a new length of towpath had been installed leading to the proposed site of the new Bewsey Tip Nature Trail, also there is a new path across the dry bed of the canal (left) I fear that if we get any floods such as those in January 2008 this may well get washed away.

Other points of interest at Bewsey Lock are that the Interpretation board that SCARS helped to design will soon be in place, but unfortunately the "BEWSEY LOCK" sign that has stood on the lock side for many years is now floating in the lock chamber.

Regular meetings are now being held with all the interested bodies to discuss plans for the Blackbrook Heritage Centre and everything at the moment is on track for the opening in September.

SCARS have also had a meeting with the Stanley Bank Project Officer Steve Ormerod to draw up a plan of action for the restoration of Stanley Basin.

There has been no further development on the subject of the lower level access bridge across the canal in the town centre, although a number of other organisations have expressed their anger at the Council's lack of consultation and foresight to the restoration of the canal in the future.
