The party included famous names such as Charles Hadfield and Gordon Biddle, who co-authored the 2-volume David & Charles book "The Canals of North West England" in 1970.

The Society recorded their progress along the Canal in a series of photographs, which are in themselves an historic archive showing features of the canal which have gone for ever.

The three R&CHS pictures show, first: the railway swing bridge at Sankey Bridges;
next: the bascule bridge carrying Liverpool Road over the canal at Sankey Bridges;
last: LEO in Hulme Lock, just before the party transferred at Winwick onto a coach which took them to a Civic Reception and Lunch at St Helens Town Hall.
