Editorial - from Dave Smallshaw

The eagle eyed among you may have seen a slight change in our personnel once again. Since switching from Production Editor to Editor in 1996 David Long has held both posts for the last twelve years and is, deservedly,  taking things more easy and reverting to the role of Production Editor again whilst I take over the reins of editorship.

I am sure that, on behalf of all our members you would like me to thank David most sincerely for providing us with a varied and highly readable journal during his term in charge. The task is not easy as copy seems to come only from "the same old suspects".  This is in itself not new for, delving back into the archive copies, I noted a plea from the former editor, Peter Keen who lamented:

"That, however, does bring us to a perennial problem - too few contributors to the Society's Newsletter. It would be good to get a few more articles from other Members of SCARS.

"If you've been on a holiday afloat, or a walking visit to another canal, or had a good day at a Society Event - why not write something down and send it to us?

"Can you tell the Society if a member of your family was associated with the Sankey in its working days, putting it down for your fellow-members?

"Or you have particular knowledge about - some aspect of its history - why not write something?

"If you spot something in your area relevant to the Canal, don't assume someone else has seen it and has taken appropriate action -tell us yourself.

"If you think there's a feature of the Canal and its history which we have yet to cover - why not write an article on it. If you find it interesting, you won't be the only one."

Need I say more!

Our aim is to widen the scope of articles in Cuttings to include relevant strands of local history and activities aligned to the canal and thus to broaden its reading appeal to members in general. To improve this we need your help – once again.
