Society Matters

We welcome our new Members : -

Ms Carol Peet - Bristol
Peter Johnson - Prudhoe, Northumberland
Phil & Cathy Unsworth - Rainhill

First the good news - the £2 increase in subscriptions suggested by your Treasurer was vetoed at the AGM. Now the bad news - it was proposed and agreed from the floor of the meeting that the increase should be £4. So, from January 2004, individual subscriptions will be £10 and families will pay £15, with half price for those who are not working.

Institutional and Life Membership rates will stay the same.

Corrections

Whenever the Society has a visiting speaker, your reporter does his best to record faithfully what the speaker is saying, writing in semi-darkness, whilst trying to pay attention to what is being said and look at the slides, as well as drink his beer, so it is no surprise that the occasional error will slip through. As a result of a request to Nigel Bowker for his approval of the report on his first talk, he has asked that a number of amendments be made to the report of this talk published in Volume 5 Number 4 issue of Canal Cuttings in Spring 2003. Members are requested to re-read that report with these amendments in mind:

Paragraph 3 : The majority of the Kelloggs' grain traffic was handled by the Bridgewater Department of the Manchester Ship Canal Company. 19 of their dumb barges were named after Cheshire and Shropshire 'meres'. Abbotts did carry some of this trade - but significantly less than the Bridgewater Department's own boats.

Paragraph 4 : rape seed oil was carried in large quantities for Bibbys (as distinct from the Bibby Line, a ship owning company, with which there was no connection).

Paragraph 7 : 'Marsden' should read 'Marston'.

Apologies are offered to Nigel and to any other speakers whose words have been twisted, omitted, elaborated on or imagined. As my old school report said "must try harder".

Peter Keen, Hon. Sec.

In our last issue, in seeking an illustration to accompany our feature on news from the IWA, our Editor downloaded a picture from an website dedicated to the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal. In the accompanying caption he inferred that this was taken from the Society's own website. This was incorrect.
