Canal Cuttings - the SCARS Newsletter
Volume 5, Number 7 - Winter 2003/2004

Looking like a winter snow scene - but the white on the left-hand bank is actually sand for the Pilkington’s Glass Works beyond. The stockpile was between the Sutton Branch arm of the Canal and the Liverpool-Wigan railway line.

The picture is one of a series taken at a critical time in the life of the Sankey - the early 1970s. This was the time when, following the 1968 Waterways Act, the Sankey became one of the waterways listed amongst "the remainder" - not a commercial canal, not a pleasure cruiseway, (for which the British Waterways Board had money allotted) - and many, including parts of the Sankey, were filled in.
