The Inland Waterways Association 2005 NATIONAL FESTIVAL - A Gift for SCARS

Work proceeds apace with the plans for our "Halton's Waterways" stall at the IWA's National Waterways Festival in Preston Brook in August bank holiday (27th-29th), and at the earlier Halton Show on July 16th/17th July.

Most importantly, our bid has gone in to the National Lottery's Awards for All and we are very much keeping fingers crossed that they will offer us some support towards the cost of the promotion. We are tapping a few other bodies for some more modest contributions to the cost, and also trying to secure funding from Merseyside Renewal for a projector and screen to display visual images.

Following the rescue by Cllr Keith Morley of BARMERE's rudder from the banks of the Rochdale Canal near Halifax, (Left: the rudder after its arrival at Spike Island - waiting for the rest of the barge to arrive - see "The Barmere's Story So Far") we have decided to make it the logo for the promotion, and the rudder itself will take pride of place by the stall at both of the events mentioned above.

A sub-committee are putting together material and photos for a large fold-out leaflet and display stands, and a photo competition has been launched, in the hope that it will bring in more eye-catching photographs of the Sankey that we can use in this publicity material.

Halton Borough Council have very kindly provided space in the Spike Island Visitors' Centre for the duration of the Halton Show, and are also assisting us greatly with the 'IT' side of putting the leaflet together.

Thus far, it is fair to say that we have not been inundated with offers of help from outside of the Committee and we really would welcome any contributions from SCARS' members and friends, many of whom will doubtless have far greater knowledge, and photographs, of the canal than some of us. We do need more than our usual 'hardcore' of volunteers if we are to make these events a success and put the Sankey's restoration on the national map. There are dozens of different ways in which your help could be very usefully engaged, either during the events themselves or in the preparation beforehand. Rest assured no-one will be forced to do anything they don't want to!!

If you feel able to help, please get in touch with any member of the Executive Committee, or directly with myself on 07766 231604 or email andrewscreen@btinternet.com.
