The BARMERE is going back on the water

It's a while since we last gave any news out about our historic Kellogs grain barge, built in 1948 for use on the Manchester Ship and the Bridgewater Canals. It has sat out high on the banks of the Sankey in the yard of Heatons Haulage, near the New Double Locks, while we tried to secure funding to convert it into a floating exhibition centre. Again and again, however, we have had our plans frustrated because agreement could not be reached on where it would eventually be moored.

We are, however, now at an advanced stage in talks with Halton Borough Council about siting it on the Sankey at Spike Island. Watch this space for further news about the move, and future plans.

Above: Sister barge BIGMERE is a major outdoor exhibit at the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum. As you can see, its spacious hold has plenty of potential.
