Membership Matters

Bernard Murphy

When this Newsletter was originally being put together in May it carried a message of congratulations to two SCARS' Members, Bernard Murphy and Jean Brown, on their marriage in April. Sadly, their happiness has been short-lived - Bernard died on June 30th. We extend to Jean, and Bernard's family, our deepest sympathy.

Bernard was a Member of SCARS from its early years, and used his hobby of photography as one of his contributions to the Society - recording events, and freely giving prints of them to us. He was a regular at our monthly Talks, and showed his enthusiasm for the Sankey also by joining in our Work Parties and assisting with our Exhibition and Sales stand. He was especially useful in entertaining the bored youngsters of other Members whilst their parents staffed the stall.

He was always lively and on the go, and interested in other people. A regular on radio phone-in programmes, he provided his own comedy act when answering his own phone, so that callers never knew which of his characters would answer the phone next.

His interest in the Sankey grew out of his avid wider interest in Local History. He spent hours in St Helens' Local History Library, trawling through old newspapers and records, and passing on anything of interest to whichever relevant group he could, including SCARS, of course. It was in the Library that he met Jean four years ago.

We welcome the following new members:

Jean Hugh-Jones, St Helens
Marjorie Stevenson, Croydon
Jean Brown, St Helens
Derrick Heyes, Newton-le-Willows
Dorothy Hughes, St Helens
Philip C Roberts, Warrington
Brendan Cassin, St Helens
Mike Harrison, Ashton-in-Makerfield
