SCARS - WORLD OF GLASS - ARENA
ART CONTEST
The winning entrants and other entries in our Art Competition were used as the illustrations on the cover of our Annual Report at The World of Glass in March. They will soon be appearing on our website. There are still a few copies of the Report available - please write in if you want one.
The judging, carried out "blind" - with both the names of the entrants and the price asked for their pictures being hidden - was carried out by our Chairman, with staff from The World of Glass. There was almost total unanimity about the verdicts, and a clear winner emerged. This was a view in the Ravenhead area, by Tom Ferguson. Two runners-up were chosen, by Jill Dagnall and Gareth Thomas - both depicting the Earlestown Viaduct, but in very different ways. In addition, a number of other paintings were selected to be purchased for display in the Sankey Suite at The World of Glass.
Our main Sponsorship was from Arena Housing Association, but we have also received a sum from the Prince William Pottery in Liverpool, which enabled us to meet the balance of the cost of buying all the paintings selected for the permanent exhibition.
The Prize-giving, and the opening of the display in the Sankey Suite, was held on Friday, March 22nd. The prizes were presented by St Helens' MP Shaun Woodward and Arena's Chief Executive, Graham Eades.
We are very grateful to our Sponsors for their financial support, and to The World of Glass, for their co-operation and work in this venture. This was particularly significant because of changes taking place in the period that the Competition was being run. This did change some of our plans, and we apologise to entrants where this caused inconvenience or did not meet with their expectations. We will try harder next time...
The other paintings bought for display in addition to the three prize-winning entries were by: Colin J. Callon, Eric Davies, George Drought, Margaret Gibbons, and Richard Keen. They were chosen both for their merit, and to provide a series of views along the length of the Canal from the Mersey at Widnes, through Warrington and Newton, to the centre of St. Helens.
We would like to thank Colin Callon for donating an additional painting to the Society.
