Society Matters
Sales Stall
The first outing for the Sales Team this year was to the Spring Bank Holiday boat gathering at Astley Green
on the Bridgewater Canal. This was a venture between the Association of Waterways Cruising Clubs, NW Region,
IWA Manchester Branch and the Red Rose Steam Society, who provided the very interesting Mining Museum site for the
festivities. It proved to be an enjoyable weekend, not overwhelmed with Joe Public, it must be said, but
visiting dignitaries, including the Mayors of Salford and Wigan, abounded on Sunday when the official
presentations took place.
Some of the surplus IWA funds from the National Waterways Festival at Salford Quays were distributed among
the NW Region branches and Merseyside and West Lancs Branch nominated SCARS to be the recipient of their quota.
David Long was pleased to accept a cheque for £667.00 from Branch chairman, Andrew Lawton to be put towards
repair work on the trip boat, St Helen. (Picture Currently Missing - Phil)
The Society stall attracted a lot of interest from visitors. We gained three new members, made a few
useful contacts and swelled the coffers considerably. After a few weeks' break we start the usual summer
shows in July/August at Halton, St Helens and Rainford followed by Newton Town Show and then the
Castlefield Carnival in September.
A new sales item for 1999 is the SCARS polo shirt, complete with SCARS’ title embroidered on the breast.
It comes in light and dark blue, with contrasting embroidery at about £12.50 each - there’s no profit in that
for SCARS, but they are good for publicity and our ‘image’.
Membership
Welcome to new members:
| Andrew & Lynn Lawton | Ormskirk |
| Mr B J Evans | Gt. Sankey |
We regretfully say 'goodbye' to Mr & Mrs Winnard from Newton-le-Willows who have supported us for
several years but have decided not to renew their membership.
At our AGM earlier this year SCARS' funds were boosted by a substantial donation in memory of a member's mother.
Although not a member herself, she lived near to the Sankey Canal and strongly supported the work of the Society.
We are very grateful for this very useful sum, which we will use to the best advantage to further the Sankey’s
restoration.
Box Trailer
The search for a box trailer to store our tools in is over - one has now been acquired, and after a
little bit of restoration by Colin Greenall and Peter Keen is now in service.
The picture opposite shows the trailer ready for work in the Greenalls’ driveway. (Picture Currently Missing - Phil)
