St. Helens' Corporate Cup 2001
by George Bruce
SCARS
supported St. Helens' Borough in their Corporate Cup event
once again - a last minute entry was sneaked in. This time
SCARS were able to scrape together a full team which even
included a female thanks to the willing feet of captain's
wife. The team was, of course, not prominent amongst the
super-fit enthusiasts elbowing one another at the front
of the pack at the start; preferring to stay out of the
limelight at the tail. The team lacked confidence in its
ability to return a fast time, having only been persuaded
to enter on the strength of the event's billing as a run/walk.
The route was very pleasing to SCARS as it followed sections
of the canal restored by St. Helens' M B C. Joining at the
World of Glass, runners and walkers trod a stretch of tow-path
which once echoed to the hooves of horses as they hauled
flats loaded with ore to Ravenhead Copper Works. Passing
the Hotties and the Weir, the route crossed over to the
West Bank before leaving the canal for a short detour around
nearby streets. Rejoining by Corporation Street Bridge,
another restored section was followed along the East Bank
as far as Standish Street. The kilometres had flicked past
by then, and it was only a short distance to the finish
outside the Town Hall. The totalled-up team time of 192
minutes did not matter; SCARS had taken part; was definitely
not last and had secured a clutch of medals.
