Chairman's Foreword
With reports of restoration work, publicity and promotional activities, evidence of our continuing
success in tracking down archive material, the announcement of revised editions of our Guides, and
other signs of a lively Society, this issue of CANAL CUTTINGS will appeal to a wide variety of
readers and supporters.
Having such a range of interest groups sometimes makes life difficult, and conflicts over
priorities can arise.
However, being active on such a wide front is inevitable for a canal society. The recent
work being carried out at Newton Common is an example - practical work, involving supporters
from the wider waterways movement, represented by WRG, drawing in local people wanting to
share their history with us, and the Mayor of St. Helens who came to show an interest, but
went away with greater awareness and interest in the Sankey - and all leading, sooner rather
than later, to a restored section of canal upon which we can involve future, fresh volunteers
interested in boating - running our trip boat. We are grateful for the wide range of interests
and skills our members bring to the work of SCARS - you are all needed, and you are all appreciated.
