MEMBERSHIP MATTERSWelcome to new members Mrs J Molyneux, Rainhill AGMAt the recent SCARS AGM, Mary Presland and Dave Callan were re-elected for a further three year period. Rick Rogers from the Warrington Ranger Service did not stand for re-election but will keep in close touch with the Society through contact with the work parties. The third committee place was filled by Peter Keen who was welcomed back to the Executive Committee after a year's break. Also at the AGM, the introduction of a new membership category was agreed. A joint life membership subscription is now available at a cost of £100. Existing life members may upgrade to a joint life membership, with their spouse or partner, for £20; i.e. the difference between the current subscription of £80 and the new joint category. Winstanley AwardCynthia Greenall was nominated by members of the Executive Committee for the 1996 Winstanley Award. This award carries a £500 prize which may be used by the winner to further their interest in and commitment to the environment. It is sponsored by St. Helens, Knowsley and Sefton Groundwork Trusts. Cynthia was highly commended for her voluntary efforts but just missed out on the £500 prize. The Groundwork Trust was set up in 1981 as a countryside management experiment within the Merseyside urban fringe area of St. Helens and Knowsley; then later including South Sefton. Lord Winstanley was well known as Dr. Winstanley of "This is Your Right" on Granada Television at that time. He was the inspirational chairman for the first nine years of the Groundwork project's life. He encouraged it to grow into the national success story which it is today. The Groundwork message is that urban greening works when quality research is married to committed community involvement. The award was set up as a tribute to the care and energy which Lord Winstanley put into the first nine years of Groundwork. Today the movement has over forty trusts established around the country. It offers opportunities for people, from all walks of life, to get together in caring for the environment. Colin Greenall The SCARS Sales TeamSpring Bank Holiday set the ball rolling this year, when we were invited to take part in the Federation of Bridgewater Cruising Clubs Rally at the Bridgewater Motor Boat Club, Runcorn. This was the venue for our member's meetings during 1995 but I doubt if anyone would have recognized it resplendent with Chinese lanterns; and in glorious sunshine rather than the dark winter evenings. The event had a Chinese theme to it, hence the lanterns; sponsorship in the form of bananas was evident and we were made very welcome. The whole area was buzzing with boats and people. We had a very successful time. However, we met our match on the sales front as their bric-a-brac came in trailer loads. The boat club members worked very hard to make sure it went! Prescot Carnival was a first for us last year and they invited us again this year. We managed to double our takings despite the thunder and lightening; and the display boards blowing over onto an innocent browser. In July, we take part in Haydock High School Summer Fair; and the Halton and St. Helens Shows. The National Waterways Festival is at Henley this year which is too far for us to travel, so we will be taking part in the AWCC Rally at Anderton over the August Bank Holiday Weekend instead. If you would like to help out at any of these events, please contact the Greenalls on telephone number 01744 731746. Cynthia Greenall
