Annual Canal Quiz

The annual competition was held at the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal Society headquarters in Radcliffe. Members of SCARS took part, forming a combined team with the Towpath Action Group (TAG). Colin Greenall, John Hughes and Mike Hevey of SCARS joined forces with Andy Screen and Vaughan Jones to form the "SCATAG" team.

Each round of the quiz took the form of a set of canal questions, followed by a set of questions on general knowledge. After each round the answers were given and the scores added up. In the early part of the quiz, the SCATAG team was up with the leaders, staying in the first three. However this had happened in previous competitions, so no-one got over confident.

As the rounds continued, the position was maintained, so that as we entered the last round, we felt quietly confident of a decent place, separated from the leader by only a single point. However the best laid the plans of men like those of mice gang aft agley as a certain poetic bard once said. Too many points were lost during the last round and we slipped down to fifth place, although still within a few point of the eventual leaders, Manchester I.W.A. This means that, since the winners host the next quiz, this will take place at Castlefields in Manchester, a venue well worth visiting for any canal-orientated society.

It was still a good night out and our thanks go to Colin Geenall, John Hughes and Mike Hevey for representing the society. Our representatives are still not convinced that large whites, pinkies, castors and squats are varieties of maggot and not potatoes.
