"Millennium Green" Project at Merton Bank MarshAs part of the millennium celebrations, the Pathways Group which covers the Merton Bank Marsh area of St. Helens, has proposed to construct a Millennium Green. The site for the Project is adjacent to the Sankey Canal. Several meetings have been held with interested parties. The Environment Agency is looking to carry out a survey of the site and produce a list of works during next year. Work on the bridle path is expected to start in the late summer. Soil surveys have been completed on the southern side of the canal in advance of increasing the forestation in that area. The Countryside Commission hopes to sponsor a Community Event or Fun Day in the area during the summer to raise awareness and attract publicity for the project. A Millennium Green Trust is being formed comprising of representatives from the local community, St. Helens Council, Groundwork and other professional bodies who will be responsible for administering the development of the site and its ongoing maintenance.
