Sponsored Walk: Sunday, September 22nd
SCARS squad steps out for blistering feat
Our sponsored walk, which was described in the last CUTTINGS, finally brought in the grand sum
of almost £700 for the St. Helens’ Lord Mayor’s Appeal and the I W A.
Members of the Society walked the full 15 mile length of the canal from St. Helens to Spike
Island at Widnes, where they were greeted by the Mayor of St. Helens, Councillor Alex Worth who
had also started the walk off.
SCARS’ affiliation to the IWA has been of immense value over the years. When the Association set
up a Golden Jubilee Appeal, with a £50,000 target, to mark its 50 years of campaigning for the
country’s canals, SCARS was keen to do its bit. So, whilst Age Concern benefits through the
Mayor’s Fund, SCARS has given its half of the £678 raised to the Jubilee Appeal.
The presentation, after our Executive were entertained in the Mayor’s Parlour at the Town Hall
by to the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Alex and Mrs Esther Worth, was attended by Mrs Audrey
Smith, national chairman of the I W A (fourth from right).
Afterwards Audrey, who represented the Association on our Executive before becoming National
Chairman, stayed to chat about our future hopes following the completion of the Atkins Report.
The presentation received valuable publicity both locally and nationally - the photograph we
have reproduced is from the St Helens Star of March 6th, and was also featured in the May issue
of the latest waterways’ magazine Canal Boat and Inland Waterways.
Future Event - Canal Walk
This year’s "Nostalgia-with-Canals" Walk will be on Sunday 8th. June: the walk will be
approximately 7 miles in length from Brighouse to Sowerby Bridge on the Calder and Hebble
Navigation. Transport will be provided in the form of a vintage bus courtesy of St. Helens
Transport Museum. The bus departs from the Groundwork Trust Office in Shaw Street, St. Helens
at 10 a.m.; returning to St. Helens by approximately 6.00 p.m. All are welcome to join this
outing. Please bring a packed lunch.
ANY NOT SO OLD BOOTS?
Still on the theme inspired by the above items, but with a very different emphasis - SCARS work
parties require safety boots with toe protectors for use on restoration work sites. This is to
comply with Health and Safety regulations. Please contact Colin Greenall on 01744 731746 if you
are able to offer boots of any size in good condition.
