Goodbye
J R A Daglish
Goodbye to retiring member Mr J R Daglish whose family owned the St Helens Foundry until it was wound up in the 1920's. Over the years we have been able to exchange information about the Daglish connections with St Helens and the Sankey Canal.

Talks for the 1996/97 Season
The Executive has not yet finalised all the Speakers for the coming Season - the Schedule will appear with the next Issue of CUTTINGS. However, the Meetings will be held at the same time (7.30pm), on the same day (the last Thursday in the month). The Venue will be at the Raven Lodge (Formerly simply 'The Raven') in Church Street, St Helens.

Sponsored Walk: September 22nd
Following the enormous success of last year’s Sponsored Walk, carried out in conjunction with the Mayor of St Helens’ Appeal, we are once again organising a similar Event.

The date is Sunday, September 22nd 1996. Half of the proceeds of the Walk will go to the Mayor’s own Charitable Appeal, and the other half will be SCARS’ effort on behalf of the Inland Waterways Association, which is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year. Please watch the local Press for further information.

SCARS and the IWA
SCARS has always been very well supported by the IWA. Representation on our Executive has been excellent, beginning with its ex-Chairman, Ken Goodwin, and continuing with Audrey Smith in the years before she became his successor after David Stevenson, who also showed a great interest in our work. We have also had Martin Grundy, an IWA pioneer, representing the Merseyside Branch, on our Executive.

Latterly, however, we have not been as fortunate. Audrey’s elevation, and Martin’s commitments elsewhere, have left us without a direct link into the IWA’s local structure. The fact that everyone in this movement gives their time voluntarily, and is usually over-committed anyway, has meant that it has been difficult for the Association to find people able to devote time to SCARS.

We are therefore very happy that this situation has been resolved by the co-option of our Treasurer, Cynthia Greenall onto the Council of the North Western Region of the IWA.
