Heroism on the Sankey

The Vicar of St Ann's Church, Winwick Road, Warrington, sent the following by email:

John Jackson, one of our Rovers, was at work in his signal box at Winwick Junction, when he was told that a child had fallen into the canal. He climbed through a signal box window, slid down a wire to the ground, undressed as he ran to the canal, and dived in to the rescue. He dived in several times, but unfortunately was unable to save the child.
