Society Activities and Events
Section 3: Communications Notes
by Dave Smallshaw, Communications Officer

The past year has seen the role of editorship of Canal Cuttings relinquished by David Long after a lengthy period of stewardship and the Society is indebted for the sterling work done over those many years. David has, however, not left the scene completely and is still busy as Production Editor and printer-in-chief over all our publications and we look forward to continuing these arrangements for the foreseeable future. (Right: the first issue of CANAL CUTTINGS, an A3 sheet, folded, giving 4 pages)

As mentioned in other reports, the restoration scene is pretty stilted at the moment so we are really unable to engender much press worthy articles for the national and regional media on our waterway but we are concentrating somewhat on our heritage strengths at the moment and hope that we can raise our profile somewhat under this banner in the immediate term.

Canal Cuttings continues to supply our members with all up to date news on our progress and I am, as editor, pleased to see that we are receiving more member input in the last few issues. Many people have their own tales, or have heard tales, about the waterway and we need to get these down and recorded before the reminiscences are lost forever. Please, therefore, don't hesitate in letting us have any details, however seemingly trivial or unimportant – it may solve some of the many mysteries the Sankey Navigation holds.

Our series of members' meetings held jointly with the IWA continue to run successfully and I am pleased to say that, in the last few months, there has been a marked increase in attendance. We have had excellent contributions throughout the last year, usually reported in great depth by Peter Keen for those who can't get there, or aren't interested in attending. Please do try to support these evenings, it is the one chance we have of meeting up with members and exchanging and listening to their views, and information received here is very valuable.

Remember, although I am trying to co-ordinate the Society's communications, it is always a two-way process so I am always appreciative of your constructive comments – and any assistance, or is this too much to wish for!
