The new SCARS mug

Commissioned to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the opening of the Navigation, this is the third mug which we have brought out. It features the "Eustace Carey", the Society's logo. This large Mersey flat was launched sideways into the canal at Sankey Bridges in 1905. Its remains lie on the banks of the Mersey at Spike Island, Widnes. The mug will be on sale at all the events we attend in 2007, and at our monthly Members' evenings, price just £2.50p. Unfortunately this item is not available by post.

History for Sale: £4 including postage!

To mark the 250th Anniversary of the opening of the Sankey Brook Navigation, SCARS is publishing a Souvenir Calendar featuring historic photographs of the Sankey. It has been compiled by Neil Forshaw, a member of the Society's Executive. Neil, a keen local historian, has already compiled a number of Calendars featuring Earlestown and Newton-le-Willows, and we are very grateful to him for turning his talents to this endeavour.

The Calendar features 13 large format photographs by various photographers taken over the years. They are arranged to take us on a journey down the Canal from St. Helens to Widnes:

January: Opening of the New Double Locks
February: Ship Inn, by Newton Common Lock
March: Sankey Sugar Works
April: Winwick workshops and drydock
May: Winwick workshops staff
June: L.N.W.R.& St.Helens Canal sign
July: Hulme lock & cottage
August: Sankey Bridges
September: Fidlers Ferry station
October: Fidlers Ferry unloading
November: Railway crossing canal at Widnes
December: Widnes Locks
Back page: Wreck of the "Eustace Carey"

The Calendar is priced at just £4 including postage, and is also available at local Libraries, and from our own Sales Stall on Society evenings.
